The Wildcard Round

A game-show-style trivia experience built in Articulate Storyline 360 that turns review and knowledge checks into a scored, competitive round. Learners pick from a board of topics, wager on point values, and get instant coaching feedback — all wrapped in a reusable template any subject can drop into.

The Wildcard Round — a colorful game-show trivia title screen with a fox host holding a microphone

Knowledge checks people click through

The end-of-module quiz is the part of most eLearning that learners endure rather than engage with. It arrives as a flat list of multiple-choice questions, feedback is a curt "correct/incorrect," and the whole thing reads as a gate to get past rather than a chance to actually rehearse what was taught.

Review is where retention is won or lost. If the format itself signals "low stakes, get it over with," learners disengage — and the assessment stops measuring anything useful. The goal here was to make review feel like the most engaging part of the course instead of the most skippable.

Borrow what makes game shows work

The Wildcard Round takes the mechanics that keep people watching trivia game shows and puts them in the learner's hands. A board of topics and point values gives learners agency — they choose what to attempt and how much to risk. A running score turns each question into a decision with weight, and the format invites a replay to beat a previous run.

Every answer resolves into a full-screen response — Correct or Incorrect — that adds or subtracts the question's point value and explains the reasoning before sending the learner back to the board. Feedback is written to coach, not just to score, so a wrong answer is still a teaching moment rather than a dead end.

Storyline variables doing the heavy lifting

The game runs on Storyline 360 number variables and triggers. A score variable persists across the whole round; per-question point values (the board's rows) are added or subtracted on submission and reflected back on the response slides. Triggers gate the board so answered questions can't be replayed for points, and route learners between the board, each question, and its feedback.

Because the logic is separated from the content, the questions, topics, and point values are all placeholders waiting to be swapped. The structure is the deliverable: a working game-show shell that a designer can reskin and repopulate for compliance refreshers, product training, onboarding, or classroom review without rebuilding the interactions.

One template, many subjects

Built as a template, The Wildcard Round is meant to be lifted into other projects. Replace the three topic labels, drop in new questions and answer options, set the point values, and the scoring, feedback, and board navigation come along for free.

That turns a genuinely engaging assessment format from a one-off build into something repeatable — the kind of asset that pays for itself across a whole curriculum instead of a single course.

Play the round

The template ships with placeholder questions so the mechanics can be experienced end to end — pick a topic, answer, watch the score move, and continue. Launch it below, or get in touch to talk about adapting it to your content.
